Young voters seen - and heard

Make room, Boomers: A new generation is stepping up this presidential primary season, and they're not just casting their votes on MySpace.

These voters are young, and while they aren't quite ready to shove older generations aside - many of them look to their parents for political advice - they are eager to share influence.

Young voters came out in impressive numbers this month in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, and experts predict the turnout in California and more than 20 other states on Feb. 5 will be the highest in decades.

"The Baby Boomers have been in charge forever, and they are finally retiring and stepping down," said 26-year-old Matt Larriva of San Francisco, a Democrat who said he will vote for either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Are we steeled for the bust?

“The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance. If he breaks that condition, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime, and the punishment of his guilt." - John Philpot Curran (1750-1817), an Irish judge.

Is the street economy in Nigeria altogether insulated from the credit squeeze currently wracking the United States economy and fuelling fears of a global recession? Think…It might seem like a whole world away from here, but is it really?

The US Federal Reserve had early on Tuesday slashed its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point. It was an apparent panic intervention to head off a dreaded recession in that country‘s economy that sent shivers across the world. The intervention was wholly out of the blue, and was pre-emptive of a scheduled rate-setting meeting of the Open Market Committee of the American central bank holding next week.

New Hampshire primaries

Nevada caucuses

Clinton won women and edged Obama in overall voting. In Nevada, women supported Clinton over Obama 51 percent to 38 percent. Nearly 6 in 10 Nevada caucus voters were women.

King's dream is still alive

Cold weather didn't deter hundreds of people from celebrating the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday.

Whether they attended the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day memorial luncheon sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana's Multicultural Center or the University of Evansville's 20th annual re-enactment of the 1963 march on Washington, D.C., they heard a common message — the fight for civil rights and equality King led is more than a history lesson; it's an ongoing process.

"Just by being here today when you don't have to be, you've committed yourselves to keeping the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive," said Herman Boone, keynote speaker at USI.

Boone, a retired football coach, was portrayed by actor Denzel Washington in the movie "Remember the Titans."

He became head coach at T.C.

Crime Slave Kids Return To Families

Scotland Yard said the majority of the offences took place in Westminster, where tourists, business people and commuters fell victim to pick-pocketing gangs.

Mostly coming from Romania, police say the gangs were involved in crime including pick-pocketing and cash-machine fraud.

Commander Steve Allen said poor families had surrendered their children to organised crime networks in exchange for a promised financial reward.

The raids, codenamed Operation Caddy, followed an eight-month intelligence operation aimed at identifying those behind certain crimes.

Charles Dickens' Fagin featured in Oliver Twist and was the leader of a gang of children who made their living through theft.
