Table Talk

Growing up Southern, it was my favorite birthday cake (though my mother often colored the cream cheese frosting purple, since that was my favorite color). I noticed my friends from Chicago, New York and New England had rarely ever heard of it, though. But about five to ten years ago, red velvet cake began to take hold all over the country. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lahey had one for their wedding cake (well, probably not such a good sign now that I think of it). And that's a red velvet cake shaped like an armadillo for a groom's cake in "Steel Magnolias."

Suddenly, RVC was showing up everywhere — and it still is. My favorite in Atlanta? The simple version at Sweet Auburn Bread Company on Auburn Ave. or a slice from A Piece of Cake in Roswell or Buckhead. I'm working on an upcoming RVC piece for the AJC's food section and I want to know: Where do you think the best red velvet cake in Atlanta is?

At dinner the other night friends were talking about the latest "trend" they've seen at dinner parties — decanting wine.

How to Increase Used-Car Advertising Results

ORLANDO, Fla. — It's early in the new year, and dealers across the land are trying to decide whether 2008 is going to be a good year in the car business or a bad one. As a result, dealers are asking themselves this question: "What can I do to dramatically increase my sales and profits and ensure that 2008 is a good year?" Here's the bad news. If you decide now based on outside factors, gossip, the news, politicians and a failure mindset that this year is going to be lackluster and unprofitable, it will be, at least for you. But for the smart dealers who understand that they are in control of their own destiny, growth, success and profitability this year and every year, loss and disappointment will not necessarily be their reality. Dealers who use the information provided here can have a business and life that's ESP — enjoyable, simple and prosperous.

Posing as girl, retired cop nabs prey

His latest catch was the biggest: four felony enticement charges against a town mayor, who after his arrest called Murray up and begged him to make the case go away.

Nineteen other defendants have included a Missouri furniture company executive, an Arkansas professor and a Tulsa, Okla., school security guard. Ten of those men have been convicted and sent to prison. One was deported. The other cases are still pending.

The defendants ranged in age from 24 to 62, with an average age of 39.4 years, and mainly come from Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma, Diamond police said.

Internet child safety experts say police officers like Murray are heroes who do good work at the cost of wading through the muck of online pedophile fantasies.

"He's a trailblazer.

Legislation enforces regulations on student loans

The $85 billion a year student loan industry faced a lot of scrutiny over the past year with regard to the relationships between universities and alternative lenders.

"I am pleased to see the long and deliberative negotiated rulemaking process produce final regulations that are a major step forward in improving the transparency of the student loan programs, ensuring borrower choice and restoring confidence in the federal financial aid programs," said Margaret Spellings, Secretary of Education in a press release.

The regulations were drafted after New York's attorney general, Andrew M. Cuomo, conducted an investigation into these university-lender relationships. The investigation found many cases of payoffs, kickbacks, gifts and donations given by alternative lenders to financial aid employees.

Bush Pushing Congress on Stimulus Plan

Democrats there want such things as an unemployment benefits extension, an increase in home heating subsidies or higher food stamp benefits. Bush suggested they could derail the whole effort, and he warned against it.

"While I understand the desire to add provisions from both the left and the right, it would be a mistake to undermine this important bipartisan agreement," the president said. "By working together, we can provide our economy with a shot in the arm when we need it most."

Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said Saturday: "The White House's cooperation with Congress in recent days is long, long overdue. And it's encouraging. But let's hope it is habit-forming."

But Dorgan, delivering the Democrats' weekly radio address, added: "We need to do so much, much more.
