Interest rate-cut chorus grows

A growing number of economists now expect the Bank of Canada to cut interest rates in the coming months as a strong dollar takes a bite out of trade. Weaker-than-expected reports on international trade and manufacturing over the past week show the Canadian economy likely withered in the third and fourth quarters, they say. At the same time, the strong currency is reducing import prices and causing retailers to cut prices on their goods — putting a damper on inflation. .

Recent actions

RECENT ACTIONS SAVAGE Monday: The City Council, in an informal work session, discussed and unofficially approved of a plan to use $50,000 from the sale of a three-acre parcel along Hwy. 13 to help improve the look of its historic downtown area. A new grant program for fixing up downtown building facades would be established for $30,000, with matching grants of $15,000. Additional grants would be available for landscape screening and trash enclosure. The city would work with the Chamber of Commerce. Formal approval is expected next week. The city's original downtown is located around the historic rail depot, now a coffee shop, just south of Hwy. 13.

The council was also presented with a proposed work plan for city staff members for 2008 and 2009 that included completing a feasibility analysis for an outdoor skating rink; building an asphalt trail along the south side of County Road 42 from Dakota Avenue to Allen Boulevard; deciding whether changes are needed in the city's snowmobile policy; developing aesthetic standards for highly visible buildings along Hwys.

(PRWEB) August 8, 2006 --Most new homebuyers have no finance background and little experience with mortgage loans, yet bank and mortgage brokers treat their online customers as expert Loan Officers. Today's online mortgage tools are completely inadequate and assume the user knows the intricacies of the mortgage business. New tools developed by The Mortgage Toolbox eliminates the 'guessing game' that occurs with those other so-called 'free sites', and allows consumers to find real answers about their home financing options.

Fallon vows to return

Kieren Fallon has vowed to return to racing stronger than ever after being hit with an 18-month worldwide ban.

The six-time champion jockey tested positive for a banned substance following a race at Deauville in August 2007, and was hit with the lengthy suspension on Friday following a hearing at France Galop's headquarters earlier in the week.

Fallon, who has already lodged an appeal, is adamant he will return to the saddle and is keen to remain positive.

He said: "It's not a tragedy - far from it. There's no doubt I'll bounce back. It's very silly of people to talk of retirement. I'm young at heart and have many years left.

"I'll use the duration of the ban to get back on track, and when I do come back I'll be stronger, both mentally and physically."

Turf legend Lester Piggott made a triumphant return to the saddle aboard Royal Academy in the Breeders' Cup Mile of 1990, just days after being released from prison at the age of 54.
